Writing for the Screen

A 6-Week Screenwriting Workshop

For information on future screenwriting classes, please sign up for METRO, our free newsletter, and we'll send you an announcement. Thank you!

Whether you want to write film noir or romantic comedy, a television sitcom or a legal drama, Writing for the Screen will give you the tools you need to put your ideas on paper, in the proper format. This six-week course will show you how to write for both television and cinema, from developing your story ideas into the three-act structure to applying professional script formats to your work. You will learn the nuances of how to write for viewers versus readers and have the opportunity to workshop your story ideas and script excerpts.

Each three-hour class will feature discussions from the instructor as well as analyses of previously produced work in television and cinema. You'll study and analyze video and script excerpts from a variety of projects for the screen -- films from The Godfather and Crash to Romancing the Stone and Tootsie, as well as such television series as Law & Order and Friends.

For those who want to share their work, about one hour of each class will be devoted to writing workshops. Whether your ideas are in the early development stage or already on paper, you'll receive feedback from your peers as well as the instructor. This class is ideal for writers who want to put their ideas into a format for the big or small screen, and writers who already have some screenwriting experience will benefit from refreshers on the formatting, organizational, and aesthetic tools they need as well as from the professional and peer feedback on their work.

In this class, you will:
  • learn to identify basic elements of teleplay and screenplay structure
  • develop skills necessary for television and cinema writing
  • write a short film, teleplay, or feature-length screenplay
